The Senate has agreed to amend the first article of our Constitution. The constitutional amendment is the result of an initiative bill by MPs Hammelburg (D66), Bromet (GroenLinks) and De Hoop (PvdA).
The new, amended Article 1 now reads, "All who are in the Netherlands shall be treated equally in equal cases. Discrimination because of religion, belief, political affiliation, race, gender, disability, sexual orientation or on any other ground is not permitted". 'Disability' and 'sexual orientation' have been newly added to the non-discrimination grounds.
Minister Bruins Slot: "The Constitution is the foundation of our society. It is important that we keep it up to date. The special thing about this amendment is that it was initiated by the House of Representatives. As a result, I acted as advisor to the House and the initiators defended the amendment proposal".
