On Wednesday 24 January, QUS contributor Maurice van Lieshout will give a lecture on his research into the first generation of gay activists in the Netherlands. Those who stood up for fair treatment of gays and lesbians around 1900 could count on strong opposition. Yet there was a small group of men who tried to convince their fellow citizens in pamphlets, debates and lectures that homosexuality was not a sin, disease or crime. Who were they? How did they work together? What results did they achieve? Central to the lecture are the life and work of Lucien von Römer, who was the first in our country to conduct original research into male homosexuality.
