Children's book writer and poet

Pim Lammers (born 1993) grew up in the Frisian village of Oosterwolde, but now lives in Utrecht. Lammers' books show children that love and identity come in many forms. He is one of the leading innovators in Dutch children's and young adult literature.

Representation in children's literature

Lammers grew up in a warm family, but the lack of LGBTQIA+ role models made it hard for him to understand his homosexuality.
I was ten years old when I first fell in love with a boy. It was incredibly wonderful, but also confusing and oppressive. I thought I was crazy, the only one in the whole village. I wasn't the carefree child who could enjoy the feelings of love.
Themes he missed in his youth, such as visibility and the freedom to be himself, later reappear in his books. What he didn't see or find in literature himself, he decided to make visible for the next generation.

This first took concrete form in 2017 with his debut Het lammetje dat een varken is (The Lamb That Is a Piglet). The main character looks like a lamb, but likes to roll in the mud and says "oink" like a pig. In the book, the veterinarian discovers that the lamb is actually a pig on the inside. It is the first Dutch children's book featuring a transgender character. In 2018, the book was awarded the Zilveren Griffel (Silver Griffel). Lammers is the youngest author to receive this award. The sequel, De boer en de dierenarts (The Farmer and the Vet), was included in 2019 in White Ravens, the prestigious recommendation list of outstanding international children's and young adult books compiled by the International Youth Library (IYL) in Munich, Germany.

Diversity as a given

This debut was followed by more stories in which diversity isn't presented as something special, but rather as something self-evident. Many of Lammers's writings have a queer element: a farmer in love with a man, a girl asking her grandfather if she can also be attracted to girls, or a main character with two fathers. His work thus demonstrates that there is room for all kinds of love and coexistence, but he emphasizes that this is only one aspect of his writing. His poetry and stories also explore childhood memories, family ties, and loss.
People sometimes think I only write about gender and sexual diversity, but I write about a variety of topics. Many people see The Farmer and the Vet as a picture book about homosexuality, but for me it's simply a book about love. […] For me, gender and diversity often play a subordinate role. The problem in The Farmer and the Vet isn't the homosexuality itself, but the farmer's shyness in expressing his love.
For Lammers, diversity is not an imposed mission, but a natural reflexion of the world around him.
"This is simply the world as I experience it. I see non-binary people around me, so for me, the leap to writing a poem about a non-binary person isn't that big."

Unjustified accusations and hate campaigns

The innovative nature of his work and his outspokenness about diversity also make him a target for ultra-conservative groups. During a summer camp for aspiring writers in 2015, Lammers wrote the short story De trainer (The Coach) based on an experience shared with someone close to him. The story centers on a lonely young teenager, Jasper, and his soccer coach. The coach makes him feel seen and manipulates his emotions. In the story, Jasper becomes a victim of sexual abuse by his coach.

Years later, this early story unexpectedly had an unpleasant aftermath. When Lammers was announced as the writer of the Children's Book Week poem in 2023, De trainer (The Coach) was cited to start a hate campaign against Lammers. The extreme conservative organization Civitas Christiana (through its campaign ‘Family in Danger’) falsely claimed that Lammers glorified pedophilia and called for a boycott. Research by Pointer shows that the hate campaign was further fueled by populist prominent figures including MPs from the right wing policital party Forum voor Democratie (Forum for Democracy). After a wave of death threats, Lammers withdrew as the writer of the Children's Book Week poem.

Two years later, during De Week van de Lentekriebels, a national project week on relationship and sexual education for primary education, Lammers again became a target of the spread of fake news about his work and hate campaigns directed at him personally. As a result, his publisher Singel Uitgeverijen filed a lawsuit against Civitas Christiana. The foundation reached a settlement with the publisher and was required to remove all information about Lammers from its website.

Yet Lammers remains undeterred. Although the author says he's more cautious about writing after the accusations and threats, he stays defiant and emphasizes the connective power of literature:
I think literature, and especially children's literature, can foster greater empathy. People need to see how things can be done differently. Always being yourself, no matter what other people say or think. That's what I try to convey in my work.

Writer who matters

That tenacity makes him a writer who matters. Despite the setbacks, Pim Lammers remains true to his driving force: giving children stories in which they recognize themselves and the world around them. His work is playful, sometimes painfully honest, but always imbued with hope. As he himself says:
The louder the world shouts that you can't be yourself, the more you have to show that you are. I feel very strongly that my books matter because they can truly help children. It's sometimes difficult to find hope in this world, where there's so much hate and intolerance. But I find hope in children's reactions. Like the children in primary school who use "The Lam That is a Piglet" to express their feelings to their classmates. That's what I do it for.

During the Queer Culture Festival Utrecht 2023, Lammers gave the first Dirkje Kuik lecture, named after writer and artist Dirkje Kuik.
